Accident reconstruction requires a detailed understanding
of the environment of the accident and its progression. A reconstructed accident is often
computer-simulated, modeled, or reenacted in a controlled manner. Results provide valuable
information about what could and could not happen.
|
Some examples of accident reconstructions completed by the engineers include:
- Exemplar chairs were placed in both test explosions and test fires to evaluate how fire
damage occurred to a chair and how a fire started
- A forklift hoist was jammed and operated to determine how the forks could fall, causing an injury.
- A barbecue smoker was instrumented and operated to understand and illustrate how a
design deficiency would cause a fire.
